Now that you've mastered the micrometer, it's time to move on to a measurement tool that's used even more commonly: calipers. Calipers are an extremely versatile tool that can measure a variety of features, including outside, inside, and depth measurements. Watch the following video to get an idea how to read a dial caliper measurement, then take the quiz.

How to Use a Dial Caliper

The caliper shown below is measuring an object that is 1.53 inches. 

  • Each large line on the bar = 1.000"
  • Each small line on the bar = 0.100"
  • Each mark on the dial = 0.001

This caliper measurement would be added as follows:

  • 1.000"
  • 0.500"
  • 0.031"
