INTRODUCTION

Regardless of your job title, knowing how to use basic tools correctly is important. Here, we will start with some very basic tool use by using a screwdriver and an open end wrench. In this module, you will attach the sensor and guides to the conveyor and the parts tray to the board. You will start with the sensor.

After attaching all three components to the board (sensor, guides, and parts tray), you will take a picture and submit it.

INTRODUCTION TO SENSORS

Sensors are frequently used in manufacturing settings. They are used to:

Keep processes on track
Monitoring processes (like tracking temperature and pressure)
Check for quality
Track where things are
Keep people safe (like a sensor that senses if someone enters a dangerous area or sensing harmful gases)
And more!

These are just a few things sensors are used for! On our machine, it senses when the block has reached the end of the conveyor.

You will learn more about different kinds of sensors later in this course.

MATERIALS

You will need the following materials to complete the lab outlined in the videos below:
- Basic Automation Trainer board
- Phillips head #1 type screwdriver
- 11/32 wrench
- 2 Machine Screws, Phillips Pan or Round head, #8 - 32 x 3/4"
- 2 Nuts, #8-32
- Sensor wall mount (yours might be a different color)
- Proximity sensor

NOTE

The materials you need should be included with your Basic Automation Trainer kit.

LAB INSTRUCTIONS

Sensor

Follow these instructions to add the sensor to your board.

Insert the proximity sensor into the bracket with a nut on both sides of the sensor bracket.
Tighten the nuts hand tight.
Place the sensor bracket on the deck of the conveyor.
It should be at the end of the conveyor, across from the pneumatic cylinder bracket.
Insert machine screws through the sensor bracket base into the deck holes in the conveyor.
Thread nuts onto screws using hands or screwdriver.
Gently tighten the nuts using a screwdriver and a wrench.
Attach the M12 cable to the sensor.

NOTE

The sensor connector has a key that needs to align with a slot in the connector, so you may need to rotate the connector and sensor to get the connectors to line up correctly.
