In earlier manufacturing setups, production associates operated more simplistic machinery and companies relied heavily on manual labor to meet production targets.

WHAT PRODUCTION ASSOCIATES DO NOW

Because of advancements in automation and technology (AI included!), the role of production associates and machine operators has significantly evolved. Modern manufacturing relies on sophisticated machinery and computerized systems. This means that operators need to possess a higher level of technical expertise.

Though improved technology and modern machinery have increased production efficiency, companies still need workers to run the machines, troubleshoot, repair, and optimize the machines, and ensure that everything is operating correctly. They also need to know how to read and analyze data from a machine and use "continuous improvement" methods to improve production.

OTHER JOB TITLES

Though we will use the terms "Production Associate" or "Machine Operator" throughout this course, companies may have a different title for workers who manage machines. A worker who troubleshoots and repairs machines might be called a "Maintenance Technician." Here are some examples of other job titles you might see:

Manufacturing Technician: Focuses on operating and maintaining machinery, as well as troubleshooting technical issues.
