On the previous page, you learned about electricity. To communicate which wires go where, electricians and technicians use schematic diagrams. On this page, you will learn what a schematic diagram is and review some common schematic symbols.

Schematic Diagrams

A schematic diagram is a diagram that shows the electrical connections and functions of a specific circuit. A schematic diagram uses graphic symbols to represent components of the system.

You will use schematic diagrams in this certificate program and on the job. Each item on your trainer has a graphic symbol. Here are some examples. (Not everything on your trainer is shown below and not everything shown below is on your trainer.)

Here is a basic schematic diagram. Don't worry about understanding all of it, just look over it and see what you can identify.
